Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

What Is a Peripheral Nerve?

Your body’s nervous system is made up of your brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. The peripheral nerves are the nerves that extend beyond your brain and spinal cord to your organs and extremities—all the way to your fingertips and toes. Peripheral means “on the edge” or “outer part” of something.

How Does Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Work?

Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) targets the nerve(s) that transmit pain signals to your brain. PNS involves a tiny wire about the thickness of a human hair or a group of electrodes about the size of a standard paperclip—that delivers electrical impulses, similar to a pacemaker, to the nerve.

Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a drug-free pain management approach that uses mild electrical impulses to block pain signals from various body parts before they get to your brain. It works by changing the way your brain perceives pain. The electrical pulses interrupt or change the pain signals sent from the nerve to the brain. The patient can control stimulation by adjusting stimulation parameters as needed.

PNS has been around for 50 years, but in the past few years, there has been somewhat of a revolution in the devices that deliver stimulation.

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)  is an advanced technique where electrodes are strategically positioned along the course of peripheral nerves to effectively manage pain.

At Florida Pain & Spine Institute, we specialize in this minimally invasive procedure, significantly reducing pain for patients who have not found relief through traditional methods.

How Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Works

PNS works by emitting mild electrical pulses to interfere with the pain signals sent to the brain.

This disruption effectively diminishes the perception of pain, targeting conditions below the neck, including:

The process entails inserting a compact wire near the affected nerves. The device is powered by a safe, external battery, ensuring continuous therapy without invasive surgeries.
